Frane Mlinar worked as a graphic designer in the 80s (commercial art, technical illustration) before joining the Croatian hyper-realism movement in 1988.
Mlinar states that one of his artistic goals is to connect viewers with the traditions of ancient fishing villages along the Adriatic Sea, where daily life has remained uniquely unchanged.
Mlinar paints boats resting on still water, centering reflections with the same focus and detail as the boats themselves. Looking at his work, the viewer is simultaneously impressed by the realistic depiction of the scene and the perspective provided by shadows and reflected images.
The underside of a boat becomes a reminder of nature’s complexity….
