Thrilled to introduce a new artist to Thornwood Gallery in Santa Fe. Maggie Shapiro is a woodturner based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, who focuses on decorative and functional bowls, vessels, and basket illusion pieces.

Regarding her process, “Working on a lathe is an ongoing dialogue between Maggie and the remnant of fallen wood before her. She listens closely as its distinctive voids, figure, and swirling grain patterns guide its final form. At times, she incorporates stone, metal, and other complementary materials to accentuate the wood's inherent character; at other times, she adds texture and depth through carving or the basket illusion technique. The curves of traditional pottery and the geometric motifs found in nature greatly influence her work. Her goal is to create art that delights the eye while celebrating the unique beauty of each piece of wood.”
