The Process of Luis Sottil's Paintings Purpose: to voice the emotions of nature Luis is not trying to paint giraffes, tigers, roosters, zebras, etc, but rather the emotions. He cannot paint the giraffe, etc. until he has been to the habitat. He makes notes and simple messages in order to capture and record his emotions while he is in the surroundings. These in return becomes the basis for the writings found surrounding Luis's paintings. He refers to these as his "love letters to nature". This is in turn is the foundation for all of Luis's paintings and the beginning of the process of communicating harmony and beauty and duplicating the emotions of nature into an art form. There are two basic elements in all of Luis's paintings: 1. Emulating nature in the way nature evokes emotions. Nature evokes emotion though bouncing light. The luminosity in his paintings comes from the fact that his materials (vegetable dies, etc.) are natural, not manmade pigments. 2. Eye contact. Animals never look at your hair, or your chest, arms, nor do they look away. When in the wild, animals always look you straight in the eye. You feel their emotion. Each animal you feel a different emotion with their eye contact. Whether it is a monkey, rooster, zebra, or tiger, the emotion you feel when in their presence and with their eye contact is different. In order to capture this, Luis enlarges the eyes 30 to 100%. You will find that the canvas's follow you through their eyes. He wants his paintings to be interactive with the viewer. The goal is for the emotions to come out to the viewer and invite you in. Luis's contribution is the hope of bringing the emotions to viewers. He described the following animals: Rooster - Regal and determined posture Giraffe – the elegant presence of a gentle giant Zebra – Harmony Fish – Harmony in movement, harmonious dance Luis's technique is self taught. The technique he has developed is something he had to come up with in order to give voice to his passion. He uses all natural pigments and vegetable dyes and works in layers. The first layer is gold, next layer is white, then pigment, then dark powders, then wash, and finally a clear acrylic to protect. Many all over the world have tried to duplicate this technique, and have been unsuccessful. Luis refers to his technique as "Naturalismo". With the question of longevity, history has proven that art forms that are more durable are natural pigments. For example, oil is known to darken over time, something that museums deal with constantly in preservation. Light will not affect his art, therefore Luis's paintings may be placed anywhere.
